Zen and the art of bondage

A few posts ago I linked to an article on BDSM and meditation. On a similar theme I stumbled onto this short video from the New York Post on the idea of meditative bondage. It features classes from Erin Houdini.

The idea itself is interesting, but sadly the presenter of the video is fairly annoying. She takes great pleasure in announcing at the end that she didn’t find it sexually charging and didn’t ‘get into it.’ I’ll never understand people like that. Not liking something is fine, we all have different interests, but why would anyone be happy about it? I love discovering new things I like, whether it’s food, drink, people, art or sexual activities. Conversely, I’m always disappointed when something doesn’t push my buttons. That means a potentially interesting and new avenue of exploration is closed off to me. Why would you be happy about having less options in life?

Shit or get off my face

This paper mag article on the NYC BDSM scene is pretty short and light on detail. However, I have to salute the writer for its opening line – ‘Shit or get off my face’. That’s memorable. It’s a phrase that provokes an initial ‘huh?’, until you realize the writer is a dominatrix. Then it generates more of an ‘Ewww!’.

This little piggy got stabbed with a wooden skewer

Apologies for the lack of posts in recent days. I’m having to deal with some job related bullshit that’s stressing me out and sucking up a bunch of my time. Pacing around my apartment cursing the name of some asshole from work is not a good mindset for sex blogging.

This post is actually a bit of a cheat, as I’m stealing from a recent Bondage Blog post. I liked it for the smile on the dommes face in the first image and the fact it features one of the rarer forms of sadistic play. Foot worship is a common enough femdom theme, but foot torture doesn’t seem to push as many buttons with people.

Personally I have a love/hate relationship with this activity. On the one hand there’s something inherently funny about it. People messing with my feet makes me laugh. When you’re not actually using them, feet are these weird ticklish appendages stuck at the end of your body. At the same time they can be sensitive as hell. Being beaten there is really intense (as I’ve experienced) and they have all sorts of odd nerves and pressure points. Foot torture is one activity that can shift gears from playful and fun into intense pain very quickly.

In the zone

I liked this short article on BDSM as a form of meditation. It doesn’t go into a lot of detail, but it captures some of my feelings on certain types of BDSM play. I’m by no means an expert on the topic, but the mindful meditation it describes does remind me of subspace.

Some activities seem to lend themselves more than others to this kind of mental state. Personally I’ve found that needle play (particularly when decorative), heavy bondage and very formalized corporal punishment are particularly good for it. Moments of stillness combined with ritual and rhythm definitely help. In contrast things like predicament bondage, electrical play and energetic fucking really don’t work. They’re fun, but tend to constantly pull your mind out of the zone and into the moment.

MomentHere’s a nice shot of someone enjoying a moment with Cybill Troy. I wonder if he’s feeling particularly meditative?

Rope gag and blindfold

My immediate thought on seeing this, was that it was from the gang over at Dude’s in Distress. It’s got the colorful rope bondage and sense of playfulness they bring to a lot of their images. However, having scrolled through their archive I can’t see it anywhere. Whoever created it (and leave me a comment if you know), I think it’s a lovely image. There’s the symmetry of the composition, but also the contrast in their situation. Her playful smiling expression balances nicely with his bound and drooling one. And something about the eye contact that isn’t eye contact is very hot.

Weirdly disturbing

This was meant to be a continuation of the dog theme from my previous post. I was looking for a fun puppy themed femdom shot. And while it does continue the dog theme, I find it more weirdly disturbing than fun.

Obviously punching and hitting are all fair game in a consensual BDSM scene. But punching or hitting dogs is horrible and evil. So maybe I’ve drunk too much wine tonight while cooking dinner, but this just seems kind of wrong. A rolled up newspaper might be OK, but a fist? No. Bad domme.

A dangerous game (and woof!)

This image contains many staples of femdom erotica. There’s bondage, breathplay, a naked man and a lady in stockings. The text is a little more poetic than the usual captions, but it’s hard to argue with the spirit of it given the noose around his neck. But what’s with the dog? Which artist thought that the perfect addition to an edgy bondage and breathplay scenario was a cute and fuzzy little dog? I kind of feel the image is part of a larger sequence that would explain what’s going on, but I’m afraid I’ve failed to track down any other context for this.

DangerousGame

I definitely need a long, slow root canal.

Here’s an unusual scene – dental torture. Mouths and gags show up all the time in BDSM imagery and play, but it’s rare to see an explicit dental scene. Even Whitehead gags, which crop up fairly often and were originally designed for dental work, are rarely used in their original context. In contrast, regular non-dental medical scenes are a fixture of both play and BDSM porn. It’s interesting to speculate why that difference exists.

One answer might be simple practicality. It’s fairly easy to learn to do basic medical play and not risk significant damage. Things like needle play, enemas, plaster casts and suturing can be done for real, provided the domme has done the relevant training. With dental work it’s hard to imagine what basic stuff could be done, outside of straight play acting. Nobody should be drilling teeth or poking gums without serious certificates on their wall.

The other answer might be a more psychological one. In hospitals we feel more out of control, where in dental surgeries we just feel uncomfortable. If we’re sick or even just being tested for something, the work of doctors and nurses seems somewhat unfathomable. They tell us they need to do some thing and we have to accept it and lie back. Where with dentists, we’re typically very aware of what they’re doing. Drilling and scraping teeth seems necessary, but boring. From a psychological perspective a dental procedure doesn’t feel like giving up control to me, despite the obviously vulnerable position, it just feels like a unpleasant chore.
